Slipped Disc
Overview
A slipped disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weak or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out. This can happen with age. Certain motions may also cause a slipped disc. A disc can slip out of place while you are twisting or turning to lift an object. Lifting a very large, heavy object can place great strain on the lower back, resulting in a slipped disc. If you have a very physically demanding job that requires a lot of lifting, you may be at increased risk for slipped discs.
Causes
-
It is more likely to happen as a person grow older, disc degeneration and weak muscles that may cause a slipped.
-
The risk of getting a slipped disc will be higher for individuals that are overweight, because their discs must support the additional weight.
-
Using the wrong group of muscles may cause a slipped disc as well. For instance, we should use our leg and thigh muscles to lift heavy things instead of using the back muscles, that may cause a slipped disc easily by twisting and turning while lifting.
-
Falling from a certain height may cause a slipped disc too.
Treatment & Prevention
-
Use a correct posture to lift anything on the floor. For example, bend the knees to squat down, then straighten both legs to lift; instead of bending the waist to lift.
-
Maintain a balanced diet to keep the body weight on a healthy range.
-
Stand up and do some simple stretches after sitting for some period of time.
-
Regular exercises to strengthen the back muscles, legs, and abdomen. This will help to stabilizes and support the spine.
